SimpliSafe Review

SimpliSafe Review: I’ve personally been using SimpliSafe for nearly 1 year now, and must say that I am almost perfectly happy with it.  99% of the time it works flawlessly and, in the few instances where I’ve had issues, the support staff has responded in a positive fashion and helped solve every problem.  One big negative is that customer service is only open from 9:00am – 6:00pm EST, but at least they are now open 7 days a week (not to be confused with the emergency dispatch service which is, of course, open 24/7).  A few times over this first year with SimpliSafe, I’ve had issues with keypads not syncing, and the base station giving errors.  I called the 800 # and we did some troubleshooting which either solved the problem, or they quickly sent me out new keypads and/or a new base station.

One of the largest complaints you’ll find online (and I had this issue as well) is the occasional (though for some people, frequent) message from the base station saying “warning, no link to dispatcher”.  The first time I had this error SimpliSafe advised me to move the base station off of my granite counter, which I did.  I finally found a good spot in the corner of my house, atop a large entertainment center, right near a window.  However, a few months later I again received the error for a couple of days so SimpliSafe sent me a Verizon cellular module to replace the T-Mobile one in my base station.  I have yet to switch it, since a couple of days later it started working again and I haven’t had a problem since (several months ago).

What I love about the SimpliSafe system is that I was able to customize exactly the pieces that I wanted.  I ordered a refurbished kit which consisted of the base station (of course), two keys pads, two key fobs, a whole bunch of window/door sensors, an extra 105db siren, several motion sensors, a freeze sensor, water sensor and CO2/smoke detector.  I separately ordered a few other window/door sensors and glass break sensors.  Aside from the initial setup being super easy (all parts were pre-configured so the system recognized them right away, any additional parts that I’ve ordered over the past year were immediately ‘found’ by the base station and added to the system without any trouble at all.  Ordering more parts is as simple as picking and choose exactly what you want from their website (you are not bound by a particular kit or set of equipment, you can pick exactly what you need to customize your SimpliSafe system).

It is incredibly easy to add/manage the SimpliSafe system if you pay for the upgraded service ($24.99/month vs. the standard $14.99/month).  With the standard plan you have to use the key fob/usb to made updates on your computer, and then insert the fob into the base station.  With the $24.99 plan you just go online and sync directly from any web browser.

As an aside, I highly recommend the refurbished kits.  Mine was in perfect condition and you can save nearly 30%.  The only problem is they sell out quickly!

The app (for iOS), is very simple to use and works well, though it could definitely use a few extra features (i.e. the ability to see all the sensors to make sure everything is working properly).  As it is now, it’s basically a big button for Off/Home/Away.
